Anais Mitchell LIVE on Free Radio Santa Cruz

Live in studio performance with Anais Mitchell August 26, 2007

Download mp3
128Kbps mp3 30.15MB (32:55)

(From Anais Mitchell website)
Listening to this 25-year-old singer/songwriter perform her meticulously written songs, fervently singing them in a distinctive, almost childlike voice, you’d think it was her life mission to rouse the hearts and minds of her listeners with an acoustic guitar. But Mitchell wasn’t always committed to the idea. “I used to tell people I wanted to be a journalist. There is a lonely egotism and self-composure to journalists. Not unlike artists, they’re always traveling, always writing, loving their loneliness, feeling somehow that they have their finger on the pulse – worshipping the truth and trying to render it legible.”

Despite her journalistic leanings, Mitchell started writing songs at age 17 and eventually started performing them live during her school days, which were punctuated by a remarkable amount of traveling. In a short period of time, Anaïs made several trips to the Middle East, and also spent time in Europe and Latin America, studying languages and world politics. This stunning, troubadour-like experience seeped into her music, and she became adept at fusing her passion for literature and journalism in her lyrics.

With a clutch of quiet, ambitious songs in her arsenal, Mitchell recorded her now out-of-print debut, The Song They Sang When Rome Fell (2002), in a single afternoon in Austin, Texas. It was in Texas that Anais discovered the Kerrville Folk Festival, which honored her with the prestigious New Folk award in 2003. Soon thereafter, with the help of Michael Chorney and Chicago-based Waterbug Records, Anaïs released her second album, Hymns For The Exiled, in 2004. The stirring collection of guitar and voice cemented Mitchell’s status as a folksinger to watch, and the record eventually reached the ears of Ani DiFranco, a songwriter whose fusion of personal and political themes was a formative influence on a teenaged Mitchell. After seeing a few of Anaïs’ captivating concerts, DiFranco signed the artist to her label, Righteous Babe Records.

Her latest release "The Brightness" was released February 13, 2007

From Wikipedia:
The Arcade Fire formed around the husband and wife duo of Win Butler and Ragine Chassagne. Starting in mid-2003, the current lineup solidified in late 2003/early 2004, when their first full-length album Funeral was recorded. Before this an eponymous EP (often referred to by fans as the Us Kids Know EP) had been sold at early shows. The EP was subsequently remastered and given a full release once the band started becoming more prominent. Arcade Fire is known for its enthralling live performances, as well as its use of a large number of musical instruments. In addition to mainstays guitar, drums, and bass guitar, members play piano, violin, viola, cello, double bass, xylophone, keyboard, French horn, accordion, hurdy gurdy and harp and mandolin. With several able musicians, Arcade Fire takes most of its instrumental diversity on tour and band members switch instrumental duties throughout their shows. The number of instruments, along with a wide set of musical influences has provided a substantial number of resources on which to draw during the recording process. The promise showed by the band in its live shows allowed it to land a record contract with the independent record label Merge Records.

When asked about the rumour that the band's name refers to a fire in an arcade, Win Butler replied: "It's not a rumour, it's based on a story that someone told me. It's not an actual event, but one that I took to be real. I would say that it's probably something that the kid made up, but at the time I believed him." [1] The arcade in question was the Exeter arcade and bandstand in the town square of Exeter, New Hampshire, where both Butlers attended Phillips Exeter Academy.

Interview with Jenny Toomey about the Rock The Net campaign in support of Network Neutrality and how it concerns independant music.

Network neutrality -- or Net Neutrality -- is the principle that preserves a free and open Internet. Net neutrality ensures that all users can access the content, or run the applications and devices of their choice.

Rock the Net is a nationwide coalition of musicians and labels that support net neutrality. We come together at this critical time to demonstrate to Congress and the FCC the music community's broad support for this principle. As musicians and entrepreneurs, we understand the importance of treating all websites equally -- from the busiest online music store to the smallest blog. We urge Congress to support network neutrality.

Founding artists include R.E.M., Pearl Jam, Death Cab for Cutie, Sarah McLachlan, the Kronos Quartet Boots Riley of the Coup, The Locust . Del The Funky Homosapien, Calexico, and The Postal Service Ted Leo • Boots Riley, Death Cab for Cutie, OK Go • Bob Mould
Calexico • Kathleen Hanna, The Donnas • Jerry Harrison • Ted Leo
John Doe • Les Claypool and the list is growing daily as of today 361 bands 105 labels have joined the campaign 115 shows are part of Rock the Net 750 people have signed the petition.

Future of Music Coalition advocates:
1# Provide equal access to all web sites and online services. ISPs should not use their "pipes" to give preferential treatment to those that are willing to pay for it. Likewise, one type of content should not arrive faster than another. An email with a text attachment should not be prioritized over one with an MP3 attachment.

2# Encourage creative, technological and economic innovation. Unequal access to the web could stunt this growth and hurt business competition. Competition -- not choices by the big ISPs -- should determine what succeeds or fails on the Internet.

3# Foster democratic participation for all citizens: an individual should be able to reach any web site regardless of its origin. An ISP should not block your access to a competitor's web site or block access to certain sites for political reasons.

Know Your Rights, How To Handle Encounters with Law Enforcement

Download Mp3 Know Your Rights mix 160Kbps mp3 (3.3MB) Stereo

Many people do not know what to do during an arrest the best option is to REMAIN SILENT and ask for a lawyer.
A short PSA mix about your right to REMAIN SILENT during law enforcement questioning and or arrest. mixed with samples from the mid 90's tv show Homicide music by The Clash.

Check out this interview with local Santa Cruz Lawyer Katya Komisaruk Lawyer Author of Beat The Heat about how to handle Law Enforcement Encounters and knowing your rights and how to assert them. Broadcast on Free Radio Santa Cruz 101fm 04-25-06

Download Mp3 at 41.6 mebibytes (45:28)

Basic Responses to Detention and Arrest:

As soon as you perceive that you’re not free to go by a law enforcement officer, say the Magic Words:
I'M GOING TO REMAIN SILENT, I WOULD LIKE TO SEE A LAWYER.
By invoking your rights at the very outset, you make it much harder for the police to trick you into saying things that can be used against you in court.

Of course, remaining silent is hard to do. It’s human nature to try to talk your way out of trouble. Nervousness makes people want to talk, too. Naturally, the cops are aware of these tendencies and use them to manipulate you into answering questions. It takes real self-control to exercise your right to remain silent, but it’s the best possible thing you can do for yourself, in terms of criminal defense strategy.

Flogging Molly Is:

* Dave King (vocals, acoustic guitar, bodhran, banjo, spoons,

* Bridget Regan (fiddle, tin whistle, uilleann pipes, backing vocals)

* Dennis Casey (electric guitar, backing vocals)

* Matt Hensley (accordion, concertina)

* Nathen Maxwell (bass guitar, backing vocals, lead vocals

* Bob Schmidt (mandolin, mandola, banjo, bazouki, backing vocals)

* George Schwindt (drums, percussion, bodhran)

Their music is heavily influenced by such bands as The Pogues, and has many references to the Roman Catholic Church and ranges from boisterous punk rock like the pirate-themed "Salty Dog" and "Seven Deadly Sins," or the defiant "What's Left of the Flag", "Drunken Lullabies", and "Rebels of the Sacred Heart" to more somber songs like "Far Away Boys", "The Son Never Shines (On Closed Doors)", or "Death Valley Queen". The driving forces behind the music tend to be King's gravelly voice and Regan's manic fiddling. Prior to forming Flogging Molly, Dave King was the vocalist for Fastway, a late 80s-early 90s heavy metal band, featuring guitarist "Fast" Eddie Clarke of Motorhead

"We've developed a really unique sound," says King of his seven-piece outfit. "The first time we all got together to play, there was an energy in the room that I'd never experienced in any other band I'd ever been in? and it wasn't due to any single ingredient, instrument or individual. We started playing in a bar and just played and played and played. We're a live band. We'll always have that." The band's fabled energy and presence can be heard loud and clear on the band's new album, which follows 2000's Swagger, 2002's Drunken Lullabies and 2004 Within a mile of home. Their unique sound has enabled Flogging Molly to entrance crowds of all ages at four of the last five Warped tours, where they have played for 10,000 fans on a nightly basis. Describing the band's unique melting pot, King has said, "If it didn't have mandolin, accordion, fiddle and whistle, it would be punk-rock, and if it didn't have guitar, bass and drums, it would be traditional Irish music. Flogging Molly has both." "Music was all we had left," explains King. "And no one could take that away from us. Even without vocals, if you have a tin whistle, a fiddle and a mandolin, the music still speaks volumes. It's the lyrics that help carry that message to a new generation." You can hear that message on the Cajun fiddles and washboards of "Tomorrow Comes a Day Too Soon" or the tribal fever of bassist Nathen Maxwell's "Queen Anne's Revenge," where the music carries hope for the future without forgetting the past, or more importantly, marking the present. Elsewhere, King offers tributes to late heroes Joe Strummer, on the pirate-like sea chanty "The Seven Deadly Sins" ("Johnny strummed his Tommy gun"), and Johnny Cash, on the soulful "Don't Let Me Die Wondering," where King's vow to live life to its fullest was influenced by the passing of the Man in Black.
"I started writing that song when I heard Johnny Cash had died," King says of the tune, composed, as always, on a typewriter manufactured in 1916, the year of the Irish uprising. "There was a man who lived life to the fullest. I don't want to be wondering on my deathbed what I left behind. I want to leave nothing behind. I want to be ready to go to the next world - and enjoy life here at the same time." Flogging Molly has released four major studio albums, Swagger, Drunken Lullabies, Within a Mile of Home, and Whiskey on a Sunday, as well as an independent live album titled Alive Behind the Green Door. They have toured with the Warped Tour and Larry Kirwan's American Fléadh Festival. They also contributed to the Rock Against Bush project. Also, they have done extensive touring with the self-proclaimed Gypsy punk band, Gogol Bordello, which is also signed under SideOneDummy Records.
